Overview – There are 41 million Spanish-speakers in the U.S., but many of them have limited English proficiency and thus do not fully understand directions for use, causing dosage errors, and the performance of tasks that are dangerous while on certain medications. One of the most important functions of a pharmacy is to be sure its patients fully understand their prescription directions to increase the likelihood that they will follow them and to decrease the instance of misuse or overdose. This is a tall enough order with English speakers. When we consider that even those Spanish speakers who understand some English may not be able to read it, this task becomes daunting to those (future) pharmacy professionals who don't have a working knowledge of Spanish.
The purpose of this certificate-based activity is to teach basic Spanish conversational skills (including the pronunciation system, syntax, high-frequency verbs, etc.) so that pharmacy students can communicate with their current clinical patients (and future patients in their profession) in Spanish. What sets this program apart from others is the focus on pharmacy terminology. Participants will be able to use Spanish to obtain patient information including date of birth, full name (and correctly file the patient according to the Spanish naming system, as they typically use two surnames), current medications, and drug allergies. They will learn to communicate prescription status and problems with refills and discuss medical insurance in Spanish. They will learn to arrange in order and orally give accurate directions for use and specify warnings regarding side effects or drug interactions in Spanish. They will be able to verify that the patient understands the directions. They will learn the necessary terminology to counsel Spanish-speaking patients on prescription medications, and to recommend over-the-counter products based on patient symptoms. A live webinar will offer the opportunity to practice what they are learning and to receive immediate feedback. The opportunity to practice and reflect upon the use of what they are learning in a clinical setting with Spanish-speaking patients will further solidify their language skills and offer opportunities for enhancing patient satisfaction.
