Artificial intelligence (AI) is being increasingly utilized within the healthcare and education arenas, including healthcare and pharmacy experiential education.  AI technology may provide opportunities to enhance patient care and learning; however, there is variability in understanding of available technologies and appropriate AI use among pharmacy practitioners and preceptors. Various organizations emphasize the need to prepare educators to responsibly guide learners in the use of AI, and recent additions to the pharmacy literature highlights the growing relevance of AI in pharmacy practice. The purpose of this activity is to introduce pharmacy preceptors to the current state of and potential for the use of artificial intelligence in the educational setting with a focus on experiential learning.

Objectives

  • Describe fundamentals of currently available artificial intelligence (AI) models and capabilities.
  • Recall key findings in contemporary literature (statements, recommendations and reviews) relating to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and medical education.
  • Review case studies to explore approaches to potentially challenging situations involving use of AI in pharmacy experiential education.
