Evidence has shown that preceptors play a pivotal role in supporting pharmacy student professional identity formation (PIF) in the experiential learning setting. In studies, we have seen that PIF is a new concept for most preceptors, however, once exposed, they can reflect on their own experiences of becoming a pharmacist and start to see the importance of their role. As role-models, preceptors play an out-sized role in helping learners understand the profession of pharmacy, how they fit within the profession and how they see themselves.
This program aims to help preceptors understand PIF and their role in learners development of professional identity. It will use evidence to highlight how existing precepting strategies can include elements of PIF to help our learners as they emerge as professionals.
