Building Practice-Ready Pharmacists: Aligning Expectations, Feedback, and Evaluations

This event will take place at Bridgewater Place, located at 205 Bridgewater Rd. Knoxville, TN 37923. The schedule is below.

Preceptors serve a critical role in the development of student pharmacists by providing experiential learning opportunities that foster clinical competence, professional identity formation, and readiness for advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) and entry into practice. As experiential education continues to evolve, preceptors must be equipped with current strategies to effectively orient learners, communicate expectations, assess performance, and support progressive learner development.

Recent reviews of experiential education processes and feedback from preceptors, faculty, and students have identified several areas for ongoing professional development. Preceptors frequently report challenges related to establishing clear expectations for learners, particularly when working with students who have varying levels of preparedness and prior experience. Inconsistent expectations can lead to learner uncertainty, reduced engagement, and difficulties in accurately assessing performance.

Additionally, preceptors continue to express a need for practical strategies related to learner assessment and documentation of student performance. Providing meaningful, timely, and actionable feedback is essential for learner growth, yet many preceptors desire additional training in conducting formative assessments, addressing performance concerns, and utilizing evaluation tools effectively. Strengthening preceptor skills in evaluation and feedback supports both student development and the quality of experiential education.

The UTHSC College of Pharmacy is also implementing enhancements to its Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) curriculum designed to better prepare students for Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences and future professional practice. These curricular changes require preceptors to understand the developmental expectations associated with the new IPPE structure and how experiential activities contribute to the progressive achievement of competencies across the curriculum. Preceptors need guidance on how to support students at varying stages of development while ensuring a seamless transition from IPPE to APPE experiences.
