Setting clear expectations for students at the beginning of every rotation is vital for creating an optimal learning environment for students. Recently, preceptors for UTCOP and rotation students have voiced concerns around issues related to unclear expectations, but there are easy to use approaches that can improve student performance and satisfaction. The purpose of this application-based activity is to discuss the importance of and tools that can be used to clearly set rotation expectations that participants can incorporate into their IPPE and APPE rotations.

  • Outline the benefits of clearly setting expectations at the beginning of the APPE for the student and the preceptor
  • Describe tools that can be used to clearly convey rotation activities and expectations, including pre-rotation assessment, syllabus, grading and evaluation rubrics
  • Establish ways to improve current methods for setting APPE expectations
